On March 3rd, Dr. Victor Rios of the University of California-Santa Barbara, will deliver the sixth annual Susette M. Talarico lecture at 11 a.m. in the Walker Room of Dean Rusk Hall on North Campus. Dr. Rios is a nationally recognized scholar with research interests focused on marginalized minority youth. A former gang member who later became a gang prevention counselor, Dr. Rios earned his PhD in Ethnic Studies from UC-Berkeley in 2005 and established a research record that includes award winning books on juvenile justice, race, and crime. The title of his talk will be “Racialized Punitive Social Control: Resisting the Social Incapacitation of Black and Latino Boys.” The event is named in memory of Dr. Talarico, a long-time director of the Criminal Justice Studies Program. With support from the Susette M. Talarico Fund, the Criminal Justice Society, the Departments of Political Science and Sociology, this lecture series has brought practitioners and scholars to campus to speak on a wide variety of current issues in criminal justice.
